San Sebastián with Kids: What Works and What Doesn't

San Sebastián works well with children, mostly because of what is not a tour: the beach, the aquarium and the funfair on Monte Igueldo. Most of the guided offers here are food tours and city walks, and the listings do not say they suit children, so we would build the days around the sights and keep one or two tours for the right kind of family.

A beach at the centre of the city

The best-known town beach, La Concha, sits in a sheltered bay below the old town. Zurriola, on the other side of the river, is the surf beach, so check the flags and where the lifeguards are before the children get in. We did not find reliable tide times to quote, so look at a local tide table: a wide beach at low tide becomes a narrow one at high tide, and where you leave your things matters.

If you want an even bigger beach, Zarautz is about 20 km west, with a 2.8 km beach. See our guide to the coast towns.

The aquarium: the safe rainy-day plan

The San Sebastián Aquarium is at Plaza de Carlos Blasco Imaz. According to the city’s tourism office, adults and children aged 4 to 12 pay different entry prices. Opening hours depend on the season, and from October to March it is closed on Mondays except on long weekends. Last admission is an hour before closing. Check the tourism office’s site before you go, because prices and hours change.

There is also a walking tour with aquarium tickets included: €45 per person, 2 to 3 hours, 4.9 stars from 11 reviews. The listing describes a walk through the city’s Belle Époque architecture that ends at the aquarium with sharks and rays. It does not state a minimum age, and a guided walk is a lot of talking for a young child, so the aquarium alone is the simpler choice for small ones.

The funfair on Monte Igueldo

You reach the top by funicular, which opened in 1912, and the hilltop has an amusement park. The park lists rides for all ages, including a train, a carousel, bumper cars and pony rides, and activities for toddlers. Prices and opening times change by season, and rides are paid for separately, so look at the park’s website on the day. The details of the ride up are in our guide to Monte Igueldo and Monte Urgull.

A short boat trip

The boat tour with a stop at Santa Clara is the shortest tour we list: about 30 minutes, €8, 4.6 stars from 949 reviews. That is a length most children can manage. The listing gives no minimum age, so check the booking page, and our island trip guide covers the shuttle and the island, which you should not count on for swimming.

Tours made for families, and how many there are

The only family-specific listing we found is the private family food tour in the old town: 2.5 hours, with churros, a market tasting, pintxos and games for children, paced around your family. It is listed at €389, has no reviews yet, and we cannot say what that price covers, so confirm the details with the operator before you book. The big group food tours, in our reading of the listings, say nothing about children. Ask before you book one, especially for an evening slot.

When it is a bad idea

Evening pintxo crawls with small children. The bars are crowded, and a tour stops at several of them in a row. A late dinner of your own, a few bites at a time, is easier.

Long day trips. The Rioja wine tour is a day of tastings, and the other long excursions are just as long; see our day trips for the shorter ones.

The hop-on hop-off bus as a main plan. It is a loop of the city and has 3.9 stars from 768 reviews, the lowest rating among the 20 most-reviewed offers; compare it with walking in our bus guide.

A simple plan

One morning on the beach, lunch with a few pintxos, the aquarium on a rainy day or the funicular on a clear one, and the 30-minute boat on a third. That leaves the evenings free for a normal dinner. For a first look at what else is on offer, browse things to do in San Sebastián.
